IXC Intermediaries are creative, articulate and highly skilled Ph.D. or Masters qualified scientists, engineers and business professionals trained in intermediary skills and processes.

With backgrounds in fields as diverse as photonics, biochemistry, design and optical metrology, and experience in sectors from medical device and drug development, heavy industrial construction, and advanced telecommunications, IXC Intermediaries possess broad and relevant knowledge and awareness of commercial and innovation practicalities.

Dr James Elliott, Principal Innovation Intermediary

Jamie has been with IXC UK since its inception in 2006, training in Australia and playing an instrumental role in implementing the service in the UK market. He has worked extensively with a wide range of IXC clients from a wide range of sectors, and both corporate and academic in nature. Jamie's passion for innovation and seeing ideas grow into successful products and services was born from his experience at the University of Birmingham where he set up and developed the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre. His scientific background is in microbiology: he holds a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from Aberdeen University, an MSc in Biotechnology from Nottingham Trent University and a PhD in Molecular Biology from Napier University. Reflecting and enhancing his commercial experience, he also holds an MBA from the University of Birmingham.


John Beale, Senior Innovation Intermediary

John came to IXC with over 20 years’ experience in applied research in electro-optic sensors and project management within the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), its agencies, & QinetiQ. He now undertakes a range of technology scouting tasks for a number of clients- specialising in the automotive and rail sector. John has a Master’s degree in Geographical Information Management from Cranfield University and an MA in Natural Sciences- Cambridge, as well as being a Chartered Physicist, and member of the Institute of Physics, Association of Project Management, and The Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society.

His interests include Industrial Archaeology, and transport- particularly classic sailing and long distance train travel (so far he has travelled across Canada, Australia and part of the USA by rail, as well as extensively in Europe, e.g. Poland, Italy, Denmark).


Ben Tura, Principal Researcher & Senior Innovation Intermediary

Ben manages the research team and our Associates here at IXC, expertly providing technology intelligence & brokering for corporate open innovation to a diverse set of clients. He also designs and facilitates training workshops on the open innovation process for corporate technology scouting teams. Ben holds a full suite of biological science qualifications (BSc, MRes, PhD), along with a discretion and confidentiality ethos second to none- honed during his work in sexual health education and relationship training.

Outside of IXC, Central America seems to course through Ben’s veins as he volunteers on turtle research programmes there, speaks basic French & Portuguese & conversational Spanish, and does capoeira.


Russ Noble, Innovation Intermediary & Business Development

In his Business Development role at IXC, Russ is engaged in assisting a range of businesses (SME to Corporate) across diverse markets including transport, healthcare and industrial with their innovation activities and strategy. This includes identifying opportunities for introducing innovative technologies into a business’s product portfolio and connecting to & delivering sources of innovation from a broad technology supply field. Having led a Sensor Technology-based business group and the BD activity as part of a Joint Venture in a large Defence corporate Russ has experience in commercial exploitation of technology utilising a range of business models including technology transfer, licensing, sale of IP & technical capability.
The closest Russ gets to a sedate and serene hobby is when he attends his favourite rugby team’s games. The rest of the time you can find him on skis or a bike.


Tim Staniland, Innovation Intermediary & Business Development

Tim truly demonstrates the cross-sector, innovator mindset and experience that identifies IXC as the UK’s leading innovation consultants. As well as Business Development Manager at IXC, Tim is vice chair of an Acute Service Trust in the NHS, developer of patented technologies, and winner of innovation awards within the food and drink industry. His background includes food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, personal care, fmcg, business support and consultancy, commercialisation of IP, and inventor workshops. Tim is rather an outdoorsy type; he enjoys cycling, orienteering and Nordic walking, as well as having a diverse menagerie on a smallholding to attend to.

Pamela Statham, Innovation Researcher

Pamela supports IXC intermediaries with her background in the polymer, pharmaceutical, food & drink, biotech, software and hardware sectors. She has worked for the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), SMEs in the pharma and plastic industries, and a multinational leader in human and environmental health, as well as the largest and oldest hop company in the world. With a degree in biochemistry, and industrial experience in new product development, technical support, and science communication, Pamela relishes seeking the ideal innovative technology solutions and partners for our clients.
Outside of IXC, Pamela has flown raptors in Wales, cuddled koalas in Australia, and galloped horses around the pyramids of Egypt; next, she plans to go dog sledding to see the Aurora Borealis, and train her Dobermann to Schutzhund standard.

Samantha Decombel, Innovation Associate

Dr Decombel is a technology transfer professional with a focus on enterprise. Samantha has skills in intellectual property management, exploitation, commercialisation and out licensing of technology. Samantha has maintained her passion for biological sciences and is establishing PlayDNA to provide art based on genetic material.


Charandeep Baidwan, Innovation Associate

Charandeep Baidwan is a qualified and currently practicing pharmacist who has also attained qualifications in both Intellectual Property and 3D part and assembly modelling. His spare time echoes the knowledge gained in the latter courses by founding an Intellectual Property news website and contributing, via distributed online computing, to 3D protein folding problems.


Simon Bayly, Innovation Associate

Dr Simon Bayly is a venture capital professional and startup adviser with university spinout experience. He has spent more than a decade in research spanning the lifesciences, nanotechnology, and advanced materials, resulting in more than 30 publications and 2 patents. His entrepreneurship skills are also backed up by experience in synthetic biology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, biosensors, medical imaging, biomarkers, and clean tech (solar, biofuels & catalysis). Simon is very active within the scientific community and contributes to, for example, Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurship Scheme, Oxford Future Business, Venture Capital Investment Competition, NHS Expo Innovators Den, Biotrinity, SynBioBeta Activate and SynBio Axlr8r.


Janine Bright, Innovation Associate

Dr Janine Bright is an ecologist, Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), and member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM). She is experienced in Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), contaminated land assessment & remediation, habitat management plans, and protected species surveys.


Richard Cambridge, Innovation Associate

Richard has significant electronics and IT expertise and specialises in cyber security. He has extensive practical experience of complex programme management for security sensitive clients in the Government, financial services, telecommunications and transport markets.


Kritika Chaudhari, Innovation Associate

Kritika is biotechnologist and her expertise in molecular biology, immunology and biochemistry imparts a sharp understanding of the molecular basis of disease for the pharma, biotech and healthcare sectors. She has taught and researched at research institutions across the globe (including technology transfer), and has authored publications on aging, exercise, smoking cessation, antithrombotics, anticoagulants, anti-cancer drugs and neuroprotective products to name but a few.


Peter Cutler, Innovation Associate

Previously Director of the Nickel Institute, Dr Peter Cutler is a metallurgist qualified in Materials Science with a Masters and PhD from the University of Cambridge. As a Chartered Engineer with extensive technical management experience, Peter has significant expertise from his time spent working within the aerospace sector.


Jon Day, Innovation Associate

Dr. Jon Day has considerable experience within the behavioural sciences and nutrition. His interests include studying the factors that influence food choice and intake. He develops innovative programmes of research in both commercial and academic environments. Jon is a Fellow of the Society of Biology, a Chartered Biologist, and a visiting Fellow at Newcastle University.


Andrew Middleton, Innovation Associate

Andrew has 35 years’ experience in the application of emerging technologies, predominantly in Defence but also in Healthcare, Transport, Energy and ICT. Initially trained as an electronics engineer Andrew spent 35 years in various MOD R&D units, QinetiQ, Dstl and most recently the BIS Technology Strategy Board. MBA trained, he has managed technology businesses of up to 1600 staff and physical science and engineering development portfolios of several £10M.


Jim Panter, Innovation Associate (Special Products)

A mechanical engineer with a specialism in tribology, and a former Board level Director at Qinetiq and Morgan Crucible, Jim’s core skills and experience focus on the commercial exploitation of innovative technology; he has particular and recent experience in the commercial exploitation of high-tech products and materials within the early stage environment of technological innovation. This innovation commercialisation includes selling & acquisitions, joint ventures, spin outs & licensing. His proven commercialisation of defence technology, for example, targeting both general and consumer markets includes high-tech innovation technology such as a foot measurement gauge for Clarks shoes; wind measurement for wind energy farms; thermal imaging cameras for the automotive industry; magnetic detection for anti-knife/ weapon security and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for medical scan rooms.


Maurice Stanley, Innovation Associate

Maurice is an experienced engineering physicist with 20+ years delivering innovative sensor and electro-optic solutions and products including holographic 3D displays, and also optical systems and sensors for defence, medical, industrial and automotive applications. Maurice is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and has over 15 years’ experience of project management of technology innovation and IP.


Mary Starkey, Innovation Associate

Mary is a capable materials engineer with experience in metallurgy and tooling. She is skilled in analysis of complex data and applies her skills to reducing cost through improvements in both material and quality.


Soulla Stylianou, Associate Innovation Researcher

Soulla epitomises the breadth of experience and agility of application that sets IXC apart as a leader in innovation consultancy. With a degree in Information Science, her career to date has spanned IT, utilities, financial services, facilities management, publishing, and also time as a systems analyst based at the European Council in Brussels.
Soulla contributes to her local region as an Arts and Cultural Editor, and also as a founding member of a networking organisation for internet entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.


Royah Vaezi, Innovation Associate

Royah has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Imperial College London in Biochemistry and Systems and Synthetic Biology. She has a PhD in Molecular Biology, focused on developing a sustainable source of omega-3 fatty acids. The outcomes of her research led to publication in a peer reviewed journal and the filing of a patent. During her time spent in scientific research, Royah undertook a number of projects and participated in numerous competitions related to innovation, entrepreneurship and successful business at world-renowned institutions including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and Syngenta UK. Royah's experience to date has enabled her to develop precise analytical and research skills. She has a keen eye for detail and can draw from knowledge and experience across a number of sectors.

Jonathan Haynes, Finance

Jonathan trained as a Chartered Accountant with JW Hinks in Birmingham before establishing his own Bookkeeping and Accounting business, Management Information Services (UK) Ltd near Oxford in Deddington to service a small portfolio of clients.
He has extensive experience of working with small businesses with expertise in using a variety of financial software systems to ensure compliance with accounting practice.
