Jobs
IXC® is always happy to hear from bright, creative, science and technology-orientated people who believe they have the skills to become an IXC Intermediary®.
What it takes to be an IXC Intermediary
We're often asked what it takes to be an IXC Intermediary. Firstly academic ability is an absolute must. Intermediaries typically have either a PhD by research, or a Masters degree with equivalent research, in science, engineering or technology but this is just the starting point.
IXC Intermediaries need to demonstrate credibility across a range of client organizations where they will deal with all levels from CEO to researchers. Commercial experience and acumen are, therefore, also essential. Remember, these are some of the worlds most forward-thinking, dynamic and research-led organizations, motivated by the need to stay ahead of their markets.
Excellent communication skills are also a must. By this we don't just mean your ability to talk but, most importantly, to listen. Intermediaries are high-achievers but they must simultaneously demonstrate humility and not need to always be "right".
You'll also need to be motivated by a love of science, technology and the possibilities it presents, have a passion and thirst for new experiences and share IXC's sense of altruism.
IXC Intermediaries need to be flexible and adventurous to thrive in this exceptionally dynamic role. Every client is different, with differing technologies, needs and ways of working. The one constant is that every idea is looking for a new application.
But it's not a consultancy role. Being an IXC Intermediary differs from traditional consulting in several, crucial ways. IXC Intermediaries:
- Take the long term view, Your deliverables are not a "report" with answers but an ongoing flow of useful information and valuable, potential connections
- Don't give advice. It's about listening, understanding and searching for the right match to fulfill each client's particular need
- Don't always "close" the deal. They bring clients opportunities for collaboration but facilitate, not negotiate, engagement with the potential collaborative partner
- Have no vested interest in the outcome of the connections they find - apart from client satisfaction.
The rewards? As an IXC Intermediary not only do you get a healthy salary but also the challenge and satisfaction of working with some of the world's most innovative companies and the chance to make a real difference.
