Jim has over 30 years' management experience in industry and retail gained from within a range of high-profile companies including Allied Breweries, Kingfisher, Superdrug and Patientline plc.   A member of the Council of the University of Birmingham since 2000, University Treasurer since 2002 and Pro-Chancellor since 2006, he is particularly interested in the transfer of research benefits to society.  In addition, Jim is also a member of several university committees and is a director and chairman of the board of Birmingham Research & Development Ltd, and a director of Birmingham Research Park Ltd.

Richard Lambert

Director-General of CBI
Following a 10 year reign as editor of the Financial Times, during which he launched the US version of the title, Richard Lambert went in August 2002, to Harvard University where he spent a semester at the prestigious Kennedy School of Government.  He was subsequently asked to write the Lambert Review of Business University Collaboration.  In 2003 Richard became a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, stepping down in April 2006. He has been Director-General of the CBI since 1 July 2006.  Richard is a trustee of the British Museum, a member of the UK-India Roundtable and the Franco-British Colloque.

Sue Battle

Former Chief Executive, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Following a broad-based business qualification, Sue spent a large part of her professional life involved in business support and lobbying on business-related matters. She became the first female chief executive of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest Chambers in the UK, holding the post from 1999 to August 2006.  During and since that time, Sue has been involved in a wide variety of business-related partnerships and organizations, promoting business in the West Midlands and further afield.  In June 2006 she was awarded a CBE for services to West Midlands business and also awarded an honorary doctorate of the University of Central England in February 2007.

Dr David Brown

Chief Executive, Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
Before joining IChemE in 2006, David was Head of Technology and Innovation Management at the consulting firm Arthur D Little Ltd, probably the best-known consulting name in the management and exploitation of research and technology. Previously, he spent 10 years working in chemicals, materials and biotechnology businesses within ICI plc and later headed a business unit for the University of Warwick. A science graduate with a doctorate in materials, Dr Brown has over 20 years' experience of alliances and collaborations between business, Government and public organizations, and the academic and research base.  He is a member of the West Midlands Innovation and Technology Council and, amongst many Board memberships and fellowships, he takes the lead on innovation on the Board of Advantage West Midlands.

Michael Clarke has been Vice-Principal of the University of Birmingham since January 2003, having served previously as Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1998. He joined the University in 1993 as Professor of Public Policy and Head of the School of Public Policy. This followed 18 years outside the academic world, during which time he served in local government in Scotland and, successively, as Chief Executive of the Local Government Training Board and the Local Government Management Board. Since 1998, he has had responsibility for the University's external relationships, including those with business and government and with particular emphasis on Birmingham and the West Midlands. He represents the regional HEIs on the West Midlands Regional Assembly and serves (in a personal capacity) as a Non-Executive Director of the Government Office of the West Midlands. He is also a Non-Executive Director of the Birmingham Research Park and the Malvern Hills Science Park. He Chairs the Boards of the Central Technology Belt, the Worcestershire Strategic Partnership and VisitWorcester. He is a member of the Birmingham Strategic Partnership, the Steering Committee of Birmingham's Science Committee, the West Midlands Business Council and the Regional Council of the CBI, as well as being a member of the Governing Body of the University of Worcester. He is Co-Chair of the Public Policy Management Association, a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and a Lay Canon and member of the Chapter of Worcester Cathedral. He is President of Community First (the Rural Community Council for Herefordshire and Worcestershire), a Trustee of the Worcestershire Community Foundation and is involved with a number of voluntary organisations in Birmingham and Worcestershire.

Dr Alan Folwell

Special Adviser, Central Technology Belt
Alan has exceptional business experience following a range of senior roles in manufacturing and technology-based industries.  His leadership experience encompasses a range of sectors from aerospace to carpets, and has always had a major international content.  Alan's particular interests are in fostering, growing and developing technology- and knowledge-based activities.  He advises a number of management teams and also sits on the boards of several diverse organizations in the technological and manufacturing sectors ranging from university spin-outs to large companies - in both the private and public sector.  Alan was also the first chief executive of the Central Technology Belt, to which he now acts as special adviser.  A chartered engineer by training, he also has a degree and doctorate from Cambridge University where he was also a double rugby Blue.

John is an experienced venture capital investor having spent the last 15 years in private equity.  He has worked at Bridgepoint Capital (then Natwest Ventures), ECI, and latterly at Lloyds Development Capital where he was a senior director for seven years.  John joined Maverick Television in 2005 as strategic director moving to his role as finance director in July 2006.  John has a number of non-executive positions and lectures on private equity for the BVCA and others both in the UK and abroad. He is also a qualified chartered accountant.

Dr Richard Hutchins, Corporate Director, Advantage West Midlands
Richard is Corporate Director for Economic Development at Advantage West Midlands. In this role Richard is responsible for skills, enterprise and innovation policy and has strategic responsibility for the Regional Skills Partnership, Enterprise Board and Innovation and Technology Council. Before joining Advantage West Midlands in September 2003, Richard spent 6 years at food industry think tank IGD. Prior to this he was an academic at Imperial College (Wye) and Newcastle University, where he researched, lectured and consulted in food marketing. He started his career in 1988 at Sun Valley Foods in Hereford as a Management Trainee. Richard has a PhD in Food Marketing and a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural and Food Marketing. Richard is 42 years old. He has studied, lived and worked in many places in the UK and abroad and now lives in Stourbridge with his wife, Ruth, and young son, Ben. His interests include food and wine, running to keep fit and, when time permits, watching rugby and cricket.

Mr Norman Price

Chairman, West Midlands Enterprise Board
Norman's early career in the TI Group and British Steel culminated in the role of managing director of Seamless Tubes Ltd and he subsequently became a group executive director of Triplex Lloyd plc.  Today he is actively involved in a broad range of board memberships with a number of representative organizations as well as financial and business support providers.  Norman is also a director of Bede plc, a world-leader in X-ray metrology for the semiconductor industry, and chairman of Ecologic, an early stage business in electronic water control.  He is also non-executive director of BSI, the international standards organization.   In addition, Norman is a senior industrialist in the Business Finance and Investment Unit of the DTI, a vice president of the EEF and a member of its Economic Policy Group.  He is also a member of the CBI SME Council, the CBI Tax Committee, chairman of the West Midlands Enterprise Board and the Regional Finance Forum.  A member of the West Midlands Innovation and Technology Council, Norman was awarded an OBE in the 2002 Queens Birthday Honours' List and is an honorary fellow of Warwick University.

Dr James Wilkie

Director of Research and Commercial Services, University of Birmingham

In addition to his role at the university, James is also the managing director of the separate, limited company which brings new ideas developed at the University to market. Initially a research scientist with British Telecom plc, James went on to hold key positions within a range of companies in the industrial and energy sectors including Shell Oil, Morgan Crucible and Johnson Matthey Plc. Whilst at Shell in the role of strategy advisor to the main board, James was instrumental in persuading the company to enter the renewables sector. Now a leading expert in the commercialization of solar power and fuel cell technologies, James holds a number of key non-executive and advisory roles with a range of organizations including Acal Energy, the Grove Fuel Cell Conference, the Centre for Renewable Energy at Loughborough University and the newly formed UK Energy Technology Institute. In addition to his doctorate, James is a Chartered Engineer and also holds an MBA.
