IXC People

A Profile of a Typical IXC Intermediary®

Particle physicists, theoretical chemists, microbiologists, electrical engineers, virologists and organic chemists, to name just a few...  IXC®'s intermediaries' backgrounds are incredibly varied and IXC recruits creative, articulate intermediaries from a wide range of disciplines.

What unites this diverse and highly-skilled team of technologists, engineers and scientists, however, is each intermediary's ability to listen, learn and spot the crucial connections which make a real difference to a company's performance.

And, in addition to the intermediaries' commercial acumen, you can also rely on their absolute discretion.  All IXC Intermediaries are hired under rigorous terms of confidentiality and non-use of any IP, as well as being scrupulously screened, on a client by client basis, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest with any client organizations.

The IXC Intermediary - A snapshot

The typical IXC Intermediary is a PhD graduate, generally in medicine, pure, applied and life sciences, ICT or engineering or has a Masters degree in these disciplines along with substantive research experience.  Academic achievement is not, however, the sole selection criterion.

To become an IXC Intermediary, it is also essential to have significant, commercial experience. Just as crucial as each one's unquestionable intellectual rigour, is his or her inherent ability to adapt to fit a range of different corporate cultures and this can only be gained through practical, commercial experience.

IXC Intermediaries therefore have a strong interest in the "business" end of science and seeing a great idea become a reality in the marketplace is what motivates them.

Take a look at the following snapshots of just some of our intermediaries.

  • A Civil Engineer, this intermediary with a PhD in Technology Management and an MPhil in Environmental Engineering has led and facilitated sector- and firm-level road-mapping workshops in the UK, Germany and the USA, to explore key market, product and technology trends and link them to business strategies and opportunities for innovation.  Voluntary work in the late 1990's also saw him working on a sustainable engineering project in Ghana.
  • A chartered engineer and scientist with membership of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), this IXC Intermediary has a Masters degree in acoustic and vibration engineering as well as an honours degree in Physics and Music. In addition to completing world-leading, academic research into statistical pattern recognition he has worked in both the telecoms and defence industries as well as managing a successful R&D company focusing on medical information processing. His spare time sees him flying and maintaining his own light aircraft.
  • Most recently a project manager for more than thirty concurrent technology and knowledge transfer projects, this IXC Intermediary previously worked as a research engineer. Holding a PhD in underwater applications of lasers as well as membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, this intermediary is also a mentor for an MBA programme's technology commercialization and entrepreneurship module. Yet he still finds time to work as a motorcycling instructor for the British Motorcyclists Federation!
  • This IXC Intermediary's PhD in Plant Biotechnology gave her the skills to create a university start-up focused on genetically enhanced ornamentals and fruit plants.  She also worked in protein chemistry and molecular biology before expanding her research interests to include nanotechnology, environmental science and medical biotechnology.
  • With an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Materials and a PhD in Bioceramics, this IXC Intermediary is a medical device specialist who also developed materials for spinal and tissue-engineered cartilage repair implants. In his spare time he is a keen Dragon Boat racer.
  • With a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and Electrochemistry and extensive commercialization experience, this IXC Intermediary has also worked in cancer research and medical technology, including device development, biosensors, trans-dermal drug delivery and pain.

Above all, IXC Intermediaries are intelligent, effective, dedicated and discreet - factors all crucial to helping you find the connections you need to drive your business forward.

This role allows me to combine my passion for all things technological with my genuine liking of, respect for and interest in, other people.
This is a demanding, but unparalleled, career opportunity. Yes, it's as academically demanding as research work but the real challenge is the extra dimension of the fast-paced, commercial world.
Spotting the connections and seeing those ideas come to life is, perhaps, the most stimulating and rewarding thing I've ever done.
The web of connections makes Chaos Theory look organized and String Theory seem perfectly reasonable and straightforward. . .
IXC Intermediaries just can't help making obtuse and unexpected links - it's the fundamental requirement of the role.
